Last time I was at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, the stage had twenty-two Texans crowded onto it. Tonight it was a Barnsley lass and five mates.
The Corn Exchange is a vast building, and sitting on the balcony it was hard to feel totally involved in the gig, but Kate Rusby did a wonderful job of slowly reaching out to everyone in the audience making them feel as though she were a long lost friend. Of course a more intimate venue would have been better, but when you can three-quarters fill the Corn Exchange, there are few options.
At other times her insistance on introducing each song, "This next song..." began to annoy. Musically however, she - and the band - were flawless. Perfect. Beautiful.
All in all, a good evening. Perhaps not the style of music I listen to most frequently, but certainly a worthy evening out.
