The roof of the south coast

Between Lyme Regis and Charmouth, extensive landslips have diverted the coast path inland by a kilometre or so. Knowledge of a further diversion east of Charmouth kept me from the seafront in the village, instead taking me up Stonebarrow Lane to rejoin the clifftop somewhere beyond Westhay Farm.
These early miles aside, the day followed the cliff closely, rolling over some more strenuous climbs.

If there's one thing that gets me into trouble, it's over-preparation. I'd read so much about the first six miles of today's walk. A six-mile path with no exits. Six miles below the cliffs. Six miles of land that's continually shifting. A place where each year new chasms and crevasses are created. These are all the things I took in. I conveniently ignored the talk of the wonder of the Undercliff, of its unique characteristics, its beauty and peace.

The view from High Peak yesterday revealed how today's walk would begin so I was prepared for the steep climb up Salcombe Hill. The yo-yoing from clifftop to valley floor continued for the first half of the walk, before a fantastic slow descent to Branscombe Mouth. Here a valley runs parallel to the coast, affording wonderful views through the trees to the village of Branscombe below.

Out of breath already
« Exmouth | Seaton »
I know the first half of this walk well. On most occasions I've holidayed in Exmouth, I've done the circular walk from Budleigh along the cliffs to Ladram Bay, inland to Otterton then back along the river. Today was the first time I've walked beyond the caravan park though.
