Ascent: 331 metres
Duration: 3 hours 3 minutes

Recovering, scouting
« Broad Haven | Pembroke Dock »

Following yesterday's stupidity, today had a two-fold focus. First, I'd scout out the next few days' walks. Second, if the weather was cooperative I'd take a short circular walk round the Dale peninsula to complete yesterday's stage.

And indeed the weather did hold up. The peninsula was a fine walk; the climb from the west bay was rather steep, but beyond that the path was gentle as far as St Ann's Head which afforded fantastic views across the sea to north Devon.

Beyond the head, walking was much easier knowing that I was walking back towards the car. I took time to explore the enormous ship navigation signs perched above the path, and the old forts scattered along the coast. Although nearly uninhabited, this lump of land clearly has a pivotal role in the area. It's just a pity the pilot of the Sea Empress didn't pay attention when he ran aground against the rocks here in 1996.

Lunch was by the roadside at Dale Fort, amidst the early daffodils that remind me I am in Wales. And then, a gentle roll back to the car, past ruined cottages on the outskirts of the village that are just begging for romantic restoration.
