Proms and guns
« Pitsea | Rochford »
When the weather's as miserable as it is today, it's just not possible to muster the enthusiasm for a long walk. I settled instead for the bare minimum. (One maxim of this coastwalk: always make progress. Each day I set out I'll always walk at least a mile or two, lest I get stuck in a rut.)
Southend to Shoebury. Three miles of prom followed by a roadside inland diversion to avoid yet another firing range, then a short train ride back.
Past all the ghosts of resorts passed. Past the Kursaal where aged twelve I first saw a rollercoaster. (Astonishingly it'd be another fifteen years before I rode one.) Past beach-huts chained to the sea wall as if to stop their escape. Past authoritative signs: "No cycling", "No dogs" and - in my imagination at least - "No fun".
